Nursery rhymes, often known as Mother Goose rhymes, are brief tunes and lyrics that are frequently read to or sung by young children. These poems are usually nameless, though the label nursery rhyme has been used to works by well-known authors as well. Many well-known nursery rhymes date back centuries and are part of a long oral heritage. Others began as written works, albeit the authorship of these works isn't always clear. The rise of nursery rhymes paralleled the rise of children's literature in general, with considerable publication beginning in the 18th century and peaking in the 19th. Nursery rhymes come in a variety of styles, subjects, and tones.
