Odor molecules enter the back of your nose when you chew food. If food is sweet, sour, bitter, or salty, your taste buds will warn you. Your nose deciphers the details, such as whether that sweet taste is from a grape or an apple. Food doesn't taste the same when you cover your nose since you can't smell it.
